Tip: Set the “unread count” notice in Mail.app

Posted by: Shinji Kuwayama In: Tech Tips

I have several email accounts set up in Mail.app, which is very convenient. However, when I’m focused on a particular project, I usually want to pay attention to only one of those Inboxes, and not be distracted by all the other incoming mail.

Mail.app allows you to customize the “Dock unread count” notice, which also becomes visible while using Command-Tab to switch apps.

Although you can’t change this to the unread count of a particular Inbox, you can change it to the unread count of a Smart Mailbox.

It’s completely effective, and I’m finding this an excellent strategy for managing my attention and priorities. I just change up the setting when I’m working on various projects; this approach allows me to keep Mail open without getting distracted.
